Tumwine passed on from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted recently as he battled cancer -related complications.
Tumwine’s alleged demise started trickling on social media on Friday following his evacuation to Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi in neighbouring Kenya earlier in the week. However top government officials and family disregarded the information that it was false.

Gen Elly Tumwine was born on the 12 April 1954 in Burunga, Mbarara District.
He attended Burunga Primary School, then Mbarara High School from where he obtained his East African Certificate of Education (EACE) in 1971.
In 1973 Gen Tumwine obtained his East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE) from St Henry’s College Kitovu.
Gen Tumwine in 1977, attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, from Makerere University, together with a Diploma in Education, Makerere University; abbreviated BA (FA)/DIP.Ed. He specialized in the history of art painting.
He joined the army in 1978 ,later joined then rebel leader Yoweri Museveni to the bush to form the National Resistance Army (NRA).
By January 1986, he was one of the six original members of the NRA High Command which later metamorphosed into the current UPDF High Command.
During his career, Gen Tumwine also served as Minister of State for Defence in 1989, Director General of the External Security Organization (ESO) from 1994 until 1996, presidential adviser on security from 1996 until 1998, chairman of the High Command Appeals Committee from 1986 until 1999.
Tumwine has also previously represented the UPDF in the Parliament.
