Published

on

On the 9th of march 2022, kyambogo university students went to determine who their next Guild President would be.The day started with hefty blows, students matching per polling station cross checking the authenticity of the ballots.Reports reaching our news desk indicate that by around 9:00a.m of the polling date, minimal signs of the long waited exercise were noticed.

However, students had surrounded the different polling stations eagerly waiting to cast their votes in favour of the respective candidates as per their choices.

Generally elections started at around 9:30am where the turn up was marvellous at a mere glance at the students lining up for the ongoing exercise. The seemingly calm day turned violent where a student whose names have been withheld, at one of the polling station was identified by the security officer as indulging himself in election malpractice was arrested.

Tension rose amongst students and all of a sudden a student kicked one of the buckets that contained the presidential ballots that had already been cast by the eligible voters which spilled all over the place.A moment that captured an immediate intervention from men in uniform who were manning the election that later fired rapid tear gas which saw tears of resilience cascading down the students’ cheeks.

Later on the situation came back to normal, voting commenced with a dynamic peace that attracted large numbers to cast their votes.

At around 2pm in the afternoon it started drizzling. Most polling stations gave it a blind eye and the voting was continuous except at APIT polling station where the electoral commissioner in charge decided to halt the exercise untill it’s safe for the process to proceed.

Reports from the scene show that the most students had cast their votes by 4pm which was the stoppage time. The few that were already in the queue by this time, were allowed to vote.Vote counting then followed but prior to this as Presidential candidates identified started marching with their teams traced moving back and forth singing victory songs.

4:00PM checked in as Presiding officers shuttered down polling stations.Police trailes around campus with DR forms dropped on every polling station a head of the counting. The process went on as ‘SERGE’ audaced the air of the stations.

Students later moved to the students center where they gathered for the final announcing of the best Candidate. The latter was tears of joy as students voiced “we want Serge” around the streets of Kyambogo University.
